Asian University of Bangladesh

Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) received formal approval from the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh on 4th January 1996 as a teaching and degree-awarding university under the Private University Act, 1992. AUB is accredited by the University Grant Commission of Bangladesh and The Government of Bangladesh. AUB is also accredited overseas.

The efforts to establish this university date back to 1990 when the idea was first mooted out by a life-long educationist, the founder of AUB, Professor Dr Abulhasan M. Sadeq, to import high-quality education as widely as possible from an inter-disciplinary, integrated ethical-human approach reflecting our values, heritage and principles. Efforts continued for mobilizing a pool of academic resources from experienced and committed Bangladeshi academicians attached to overseas universities. The academic programs of AUB have been prepared by experts with co-operation from reputed overseas universities to meet international standards of education.

Philosophy and Mission :

"Knowledge with action is the basis of human welfare, provided it upgrades human quantities and faculties as well as professional skills. Such knowledge is a right as well as an obligation of every human being, which should be provided by a system of universal education. Besides, a nation's identity should be reflected in its education system. Based on this philosophy, AUB's mission is to disseminate knowledge in an ethical-human approach reflecting the identity of our nation with its heritage, values and principles.

 

Objectives :

The specific objectives of AUB are as follows:


(a). To provide high-quality education for human resource development so as to enable the students to compete in the modern world.

(b). To disseminate knowledge in an ethical-human approach integrating our national heritage, values and principles with a view to producing graduates who are professionally sound and morally upright.

(c). To make such education accessible to all groups of people in the country, including the general masses of the population, rural as well as urban, fresh students as well as working people.

(d). To provide a conducive academic atmosphere for intelligent development of the youth in an environment free from political and other disturbances.

(e). To contribute to the moral uplift of the people and create a society of tolerance to co-exist in peace and harmony in a healthy atmosphere.

REQUIREMENTS

For students who have undergone SSC and HSC examinations, the minimum requirements for undergraduate admissions are as follows: 1. GPA of at least 2.5 at both SSC and HSC levels 2. GPA of at least 2.0 at either SSC or HSC level, and a combined GPA of 6.0 from both SSC and HSC examinations 3. Combined GPA of 5.0 from both SSC and HSC examinations for children of freedom fighters Applicants with equivalent results from other examinations are also considered for admission. Some programs may have additional requirements, which can be found in the description of that program in this catalogue. Admission into postgraduate programs requires, in general, a related bachelor degree. However, entry requirements for postgraduate programs may vary from program to program. Refer to the program descriptions in this catalogue for further information.

English Language Requirement Proficiency in English is essential to pursue the BBA program. Those who are admitted to BBA program will be required to submit documents about their level of proficiency in English. This requirement may be satisfied by a TOEFL score of at least 550 or 6.5 in IELTS or equivalent scores in other examinations. For those students who cannot satisfy the above requirements, the university will organize a set of four Intensive English Language courses in the first semester of their studies. Students will have to pass this course with at least a ‘C’ grade before they are allowed to join the main BBA program. Students failing to achieve a ‘C’ grade in the first attempt will be allowed only one more semester to improve their grades in English.

Library Facilities

AUB has a rich modern library with more than two lac copies of books and journals from which students can borrow textbooks, reference books, journals, and audio-visual materials. Library resources include printed materials, films, videos and CDs.

 

Lab Facilities

AUB has technology in education. It has five Software Labs and one Digital lab which are fully air-conditioned. In the computer lab, students can access the internet facility free of cost. The Software Labs are equipped with highly configured desktop PCs, which are operated with the sophisticated and latest version of the software; and the Digital Lab is fully developed with the sophisticated and latest equipment. The PCs are provided in the class on a one-to-one basis in order to enable students to learn practically and smoothly. The most interesting and amusing news is that ABU will be going to set up a world-class internet state –of- the art technology lab in its permanent campus (at Ashulia). Most of the PCs are of the latest configurations.

Free WiFi facilities are available in all the academic premises of AUB. Valid students, faculty members and other staffs of AUB have 24 hours free access with Laptops, Mobile Phones and other Smart devices.

Co-curricular Activities

 

AUB believes in an integrated approach to education. Accordingly, with an objective to produce an integrated personality among students, AUB has adopted some co-curricular programs for the students. These are as follows:

The academic activities of students include seminars, workshops, debate, programming contests, software competitions, and so on, which help the students to expand their knowledge, gain experience and training in academic pursuits beyond their textbooks and courses.
The community service inculcates among the students a sense of responsibility to the community, nation and humanity at large. This includes assistance (relief) to the victims of natural calamities, help to the needy, blood donations, and so on.
AUB differentiates between literacy and education. Literacy refers to professional skills alone, while education incorporates moral and ethical developments. The elements of ethics and morality have been incorporated in both curricular and co-curricular activities of AUB, including seminars and talks on moral issues. Besides, AUB supports student sports, which are important for both physical development and a sound state of mind. AUB students are also active in sports and games. They have participated in national linter-university sports tournaments and have done well in them.
Students of AUB spend an active life beyond their studies in accordance with the co-curricular activities planned by both AUB and by the students themselves. In debate, AUB teams participated at inter-university competitions and became winner at a debate competition organized by Bangladesh Television and also did well in international competitions in Malaysia and other countries. They regularly organize seminars and workshops in which VIPs like ministers, scholars and academicians participate.
The students of AUB are active in community service. They mobilize relief funds, distribute them to the victims of calamities, and also provide assistance to the poor in slum areas. AUB received "The Best Motivator of the Year" award in blood donation, awarded by the Sandhani, Dhaka Medical College. Besides, in morality and culture, AUB students organize seminars and talks to inculcate and strengthen moral values among the students. However, all kinds of direct political activism are prohibited at AUB.

Fees vary based on the number of courses/credits taken by the student in each semester. The fee for credit courses is Tk. 500/- per credit, while non-credit courses are treated as courses of one credit hour. There is also a miscellaneous fee of Tk. 500/- per semester and a one-time admission fee of Tk. 1000 in the first semester only.
